Info
“Held by the Land” is a floor lamp inspired by indigenous ethnobotanist Leigh Joseph’s book on building reciprocal relationships with plants and the land. It brings together Daoist ideas from Joy’s Chinese heritage and Indigenous perspectives that see land as sacred, active, and more than a resource. Instead of treating wood as material for its economical value, the lamp treats it as a relative to be honoured through time‑intensive, careful making. Carved ash and white oak panels break the light into soft, rippling patterns. A ring of fringe at the base softens the transition between panels and ground. The lamp is not designed primarily to only brighten a room. Its true purpose is to reveal the wood grain, the carved texture, and highlight the small irregularities. By offering a slow, low‑cognitive‑load visual experience, it creates a quiet place for mental restoration. “Held by the Land” invites users to notice the living origin of the material and to treat that everyday encounter with light as a small act of care within a larger, ongoing relationship with the land.
